Thrillbuilders
Welcome to the crazy carnival of your own creation. Many of the products and places that girls come into contact with every day have moving parts.  This unit uses a fun, exciting place – an amusement park – as a basis for understanding simple machines and how they relate to things we use every day.  The ThrillBuilders program introduces girls to simple machines.  Girls will use levers, fulcrums, and potential energy to create a catapult-inspired bean bag toss.  They will judge the safety of the equipment as Safety Engineers.

There are two programs to choose from:

1. Engineers to the Rescue

Survival skills meet science as girls survive their troop’s (make-believe) camping trip in Yellowstone National Park.  Although scientists didn’t predict it, there was an earthquake which shook the troop’s tents for two minutes and broke the water pumps. To make matters worse, all cell phones are dead and the girls can’t call for help.  As a troop, the girls must create a water filter to clean water for drinking using the materials found at their campsite and in their backpacks.  They will also build a shelter to withstand any aftershocks -- girls will take on different engineering roles to build a structure that can withstand an earthquake and rainstorm.

2. Power it Up

Girls learn about the basic concepts behind electricity and unmask the truth about how electronic components work in a circuit. They learn electronics and circuitry through a series of hands-on investigations. They begin with exploration of snap circuits and learn about basic electronic components.  Using simple concepts with the snap circuits will result in blinking lights, loud noises, and flying objects! Girls will also predict if materials are conductors or insulators; they will test their predictions using a simple circuit.

2011 Youth for Astronomy & Engineering: Parent and Daughter Evening Under the Stars

On Friday, November 4, 2011, Space Telescope Science Institute will be hosting "Parent and Daughter Evening Under the Stars". Girls in grades 6-12 and their parents are invited to join us for a dinner reception, astronomy/engineering interactive colloquium and hands-on activity.  They will also have a chance to observe the stars and planets through the JHU Offit Telescope.

GSCM Science in the Kitchen: Wednesday, October 19th

Description: Science and food make a sizzling combination!  Girls will be introduced to the basic principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and more through hands-on experiments.  For example, in the Science of Sugar session, you will learn about the science of sugar and the process that it goes through to make various types of candy. In our last session, we made pizza, made honeycomb candy, changed the color of grape juice, played with spaghetti, created fireballs from oranges, and turned on a light bulb without electricity!  Sign up for our next session on Wednesday, October 19th!

Registering your eCYBERMISSION Team: A step-by-step guide!

Registering your complete eCYBERMISSION Team by the Dec. 16, 2011, deadline only takes a couple of minutes to complete. All you need is a computer, the Internet and your teammates! Complete eCYBERMISSION Teams must consist of three to four students in the same grade and state, plus an adult Team Advisor.

Student Registration

• On the eCYBERMISSION website, select “Student Registration” under the “Registration” tab.
• Fill out the necessary information, including grade, gender and date of birth.
• Create a username and password. Remember that you cannot change your username!
• Select “Submit.”
• If you are the first person on your team to register, select “Create a Team” and enter the desired team name to create the team, plus your grade and state.
• All remaining team members should select “Join a Team” and search for the team name already created.
• Select “Submit” and begin working on your Mission Folder!

Team Advisor Registration

• On the eCYBERMISSION website, select “Team Advisor Registration” under the “Registration” tab.
• Search for and select the school or organization you represent.
• Create a user account by providing information such as your email address and date of birth.
• Create a username and password. Remember that you cannot change your username! If you’re sponsoring more than one team, you can use the same username for all of your teams. Your username should begin with “TA” (for example, TAjones).
• Select “Submit.”
• Follow the same guidance above to create or join a team.

2012 GSCM Encampment

Want to join in one of the biggest GSCM events of the year?    All registered girls, from bridging Brownies through Ambassadors, are invited to our Golden Anniversary encampment.  Next year marks the 100^th year for Girl Scouting nationwide and 50 years for GSCM.   Focusing on “Girl Scouting Through the Years,” our  2012 GSCM Encampment will be held April 27 – 29 at Camp Conowingo.  Girls will make new friends while enjoying Girl Scout camp traditions and new activities.  To decide what those new activities will be, we need  girls’ input.  That way, we can offer activities that  are fun and exciting.  If girls click here  www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012GSCMEncampmentInterestSurvey , they can let us know what THEY want to do at the encampment.  

In addition to troop leaders, we’ll need dozens of volunteers to help with the activity stations, meal preparation and the check in/check out process.  So, spread the word to adults as well as Girl Scouts so that together we can have a wonderful event that brings hundreds of people together.
