GSCM: Science in the Kitchen

Description: Science and food make a sizzling combination!  Girls will be introduced to the basic principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and more through hands-on experiments.  For example, in the Science of Sugar session, you will learn about the science of sugar and the process that it goes through to make various types of candy.  Each date will be fun packed with different experiments; sign up for one or all!  Spring/summer sessions will be posted in January 2012.

Rosie the Riveter Event at Glenn L. Martin MD Aviation Museum

Women  who worked in men’s jobs during World War II, the  Rosie the Riveters, were pioneers of the 1940’s as they did jobs never before done by women. These courageous ladies with a "We Can Do It" spirit are being honored at the Glenn L. Martin MD Aviation Museum, located at Martin State Airport in Middle River on Saturday, October 8 from 11am - 1pm. We are in search of Girl Scouts to participate in this free event for serving as Rosie escorts, greeters, readers in the program, award presenting assistance, and musical selections. We are also looking for a troop to serve as honor guard and present the flags and lead the Pledge of Allegiance, a ceremonial part of the program the ladies always enjoy. FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Update

Conowingo Design Your Own Room Survey

2011 Camp Conowingo girls: For those of you in 4^th grade and up, you might have had the opportunity to do the “Design your own room” program during one of your art sessions with camp counselor Moon.  In this program, you designed your own environmentally friendly (or “green”) room and made a model of it in a shoebox.  In order for us to provide more STEM programs in the future, we will need all of our participants to fill out a post-survey.   Please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GSCM-camp to fill out the post-survey.  Thank you! 

Register for eCYBERMISSION by Sept. 30, 2011 and be the first to receive your Research Kit!

Don’t delay in registering your team for the 2011-2012 eCYBERMISSION Competition! If you register your complete team by Sept. 30, 2011 at www.ecybermission.com, you will be the first to receive your very own Research Kit in October to assist in completing your eCYBERMISSION project. This includes a flash drive, pencil and notebook per student on your team of three to four. Teams that complete their registration after this date will receive their Research Kits after registration closes on Dec. 16, 2011.

eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition for students in grades six through nine. Sponsored by the U.S. Army, eCYBERMISSION is designed to share the importance of STEM education with the leaders of tomorrow and encourage them to understand the real-life applications of these subjects. Students compete for State, Regional and National Awards by working in teams to identify a problem in their community and use the scientific method, scientific inquiry or engineering design process to propose a solution. Students on winning teams can receive up to $8,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds. The 16 First-Place Regional Winning Teams will receive an all-expenses paid trip to attend the National Judging and Educational Event in Washington, D.C. in June 2012.

Young Engineers and Scientists Seminars (YESS)

Description: At the Young Engineers and Scientists Seminars (YESS), you can listen to intriguing lectures from some of the area's finest engineers on topics such as aeronautical enginering, the pinciples of radars, and materials sciences.  You will also learn to apply various engineering concepts through weekly team contests, as well as a final contest to conclude the seminar.  Points are awarded for competing in the competitions and the points leaders by the final seminar will be elegible to receive a prize!  Work to complete fun team projects like making a rubber band powered car or a tower entirely made from popsicle sticks.  This program is sponsored by the National Electronics Museum and Northrop Grumman.
